Motorcycle speeder booked for drug

STEPTOE – A man was booked into Whitman County Jail Saturday night after hitting speeds of 150 miles per hour and allegedly admitting to drug use.

Saturday night at approximately 7:30 p.m., Deputy Tim Cox of the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office observed a motorcycle traveling southbound on SR 195 near mile post 52 at speeds approaching 100 mph. Deputy Cox turned on the motorcyclist and activated his emergency lights in an attempt to stop the speeding biker.

Deputy Cox continued to pursue the motorcyclist southbound at speeds in excess of 100 mph while the motorcycle continued to pull further away. After chasing the biker for several miles, Deputy Cox was able to see a brake light and a cloud of dust presumably from the motorcycle, as it pulled into the RV Park in Steptoe. According to the arrest report, Deputy Cox saw the driver lay the motorcycle down and run behind a building. With assistance of witnesses in the area, deputies were able to identify a travel trailer where the driver was believed to be residing.

Deputies were able to make contact with the driver of the motorcycle, identified as Zannan Cameron, 24, of Steptoe, at the trailer. During the contact, Cameron admitted he was running from the police because of he believed he had a warrant for his arrest. Cameron admitted to deputies that he thought he was traveling at speeds near 150 mph in an attempt to elude the police. He also admitted to being in possession of methamphetamine, allegedly in his trailer. During a protective sweep of the trailer, deputies also observed several uncapped needles.

Based on this information deputies applied for and were granted a search warrant for his residence. During the search of the trailer, deputies located small quantities of heroin and methamphetamine.

Cameron was later booked into the Whitman County Jail on charges of felony eluding, obstruction, possession of a controlled substance and driving with a suspended license. He was also booked on an out-of-county warrant for two counts of theft and possession of a controlled substance.

Cameron is being held without bail. He was scheduled to have his first appearance on Monday afternoon.
