Bid set for solid waste building additions

COLFAX – The re-bids are in for the remodeling/expansion of the Moderate Waste Building at the county landfill.

The new lowest bidder is $812,278 from Mangum Construction of Clarkston, for the project that originally went out to bid in March.

The county received just two bids then – during the initial virus shutdowns – one well over the engineer's estimate and the other with irregularities.

On June 15, County Public Works Director Mark Storey opened four new bids for the project, which will add an estimated 2,000-square feet to the landfill building, paid for by the Solid Waste operations budget.

Aside from Mangum, Associate Construction of Spokane bid $928,888, Halme Builders of Davenport came in at $965,500 and Kenaston Construction of Lewiston $1,030,760.

The moderate waste building (MRW) is for household hazardous waste, including paint, pesticides, certain household cleaners, batteries and more.

Last December, draft designs arrived from Great West Engineering of Boise for the 25-year-old MRW– to remodel the existing building and put in two additions.

Construction is expected to begin by early August, to be complete around Thanksgiving.

When a homeowner brings in a can of paint to MRW, for example, it is put in a 55-gallon drum which is “lab-packed” and sent to a distributor in Spokane, which ships it to a toxic waste landfill such as in Arlington, Ore.
