STEPTOE – A man who hit speeds of 150 miles per hour on a motorcycle and allegedly admitting to drug use entered a guilty plea for eluding.
Zannan Cameron, 24, was booked into Whitman County Jail May 9. According to the arrest report, Deputy Tim Cox of the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office observed a motorcycle traveling southbound on SR 195 near mile post 52 at speeds approaching 100 mph. Deputy Cox pursued the motorcyclist southbound at speeds in excess of 100 mph while the motorcycle continued to pull further away. After chasing the biker for several miles, Deputy Cox was able to see a brake light and a cloud of dust presumably from the motorcycle, as it pulled into the RV Park in Steptoe.
According to the report, when contacted, Cameron admitted he was running from the police because of he believed he had a warrant for his arrest. Cameron admitted to deputies that he thought he was traveling at speeds near 150 mph in an attempt to elude the police. He also admitted to being in possession of methamphetamine, allegedly in his mobile trailer. During a protective sweep of the trailer, deputies observed several uncapped needles.
He was charged with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and drug possession charges for methamphetamine and heroin.
Cameron accepted a plea agreement June 12 wherein he pled guilty to the eluding charge and the drug charges were dropped.
A sentencing hearing was scheduled for July 10, but continued to July 24. The county prosecutor's office is recommending a drug offender alternative sentencing.
