Serving Whitman County since 1877
COLFAX—Whitman County Commissioners Monday approved three expenditures of federal CARES Act money, for which the county has a total of $2.7 million for COVID-19 relief.
Commissioners committed $575,000 to small-business aid to be administered by Southeast Washington Economic Development Association (SEWEDA), up to $300,000 for Community Action Center and $100,000 for Palouse River Counseling.
Another disbursement is expected around the end of September as commissioners hold some of the funding back in case of greater need to come.
“We’re not spending it all now,” said Commissioner Art Swannack. “If we get a big blowup in cases, it may be needed for PPE (personal protective equipment) or otherwise.”
Whitman County has been awarded $2,757,100 in federal aid for the period of March 1- Oct. 31. Local towns and cities have also received a minimum of $25,000 each. CARES stands for the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act.
