Serving Whitman County since 1877
PALOUSE-Representatives from Pullman's League of Women Voters chapter went to Palouse city hall Aug. 28 to recognize leadership of women city council members in elected office.
It was the latest stop for the LWV representatives – from the group's Centennial Award Committee – who went to 16 towns in the county to present each city clerk with a copy of the proclamation of the Whitman County Commissioners designating August as Womens' Leadership Month in the county. The recognition marks the centennial of the right to vote in federal elections.
Washington State had passed the law allowing women to vote 10 years earlier but that was restricted to state elections.
In addition to the proclamation, each town clerk was given a list of the women who have served as council members or as mayors of each community. The clerks have been asked to verify or correct, as they are able, the list of office holders.
These corrected lists will be used for a public ceremony when virus protocols allow. Communities will be invited, and a commemorative listing for each community to display in their town council meeting rooms will be presented.
