Nighttime softball tournament moved to Colfax

COLFAX—Usually held in Selah every year, the “Under the Milky Way” softball tournament moved to Colfax Aug. 29-30, running from 7 p.m. – 3:30 a.m. at McDonald Park.

A total of 18 teams, made up of girls 18 & under, participated in the round-robin format, with no winner.

“It was a fun little tournament, we made sure we were following all guidelines,” said Pete Koerner, tournament co-director, referring to virus protocols. “It was all for the kids. We want these girls to play.”

Using the park’s one field with lights, a second field was lit by lights brought in from the McGregor Company. Koerner was assisted by Steve Larkin, tournament co-director.

Teams camped overnight, coming from Spokane, Lewiston, Clarkston, Coeur d’Alene, Seattle, Walla Walla and Moses Lake.

Before the tournament, organizers had parents of players send in forms stating how many people they planned to bring to the event – which barred fans from bleachers.

“We tried to discourage as many people from coming as possible,” said Koerner.

Spectators were allowed outside the outfield fences. Various players used the bleachers during games for more social-distancing than dugouts allowed.
