New flooring goes in at Whitman Hospital emergency

COLFAX—Flooring replacement work is underway at the Whitman Hospital and Medical Center emergency department.

New surfaces are being installed in the trauma room, six exam rooms and an office—hot-welded, one-solid sheet vinyl, with no seams, extending two inches up the walls.

Skelton’s Carpet of Lewiston started the work Sept. 8, on the estimated $78,000 project, which meets requirements by the Washington State Department of Health. The new flooring, which comes with a 20-year guarantee, takes 72 hours to cure.

The crew works on two rooms at a time.

If an influx of patients arrive, the hospital may use upstairs rooms to expand emergency space, according to Laurie Schmidt, director of cardiopulmonary and emergency room services.

The flooring replaces what was installed in 2008, after it developed small holes from wear and tear from chairs and doctor’s stools. The hospital has since replaced the wheels on each to reduce their impact.

The full project is expected to be done in mid-October.
