COLFAX - The 2021 Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) program, usually conducted in March, is Nov. 21 at the First Baptist Church.
Due to COVID, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) moved nearly all high school sporting events to January through June of 2021. This is to allow the girls sports time and avoid spring scheduling conflict.
The DYW of Colfax board decided to move the event to select representatives to a fall slot. The March 2020 program was postponed to June 20.
Five girls performed for the judges and their families to earn $3,500 in scholarships.
Kari Largent was selected to represent Colfax and was named Distinguished Young Woman of Washington through a virtual program on Aug. 1. She will represent Washington and compete in Mobile, Ala., in June 2021.
For the Colfax 2021 program, each contestant will compete in the categories of scholastic, interview, fitness, talent and self-expression/public speaking.
The DYW of Colfax board is seeking donations to help support the scholarship awards for winners of the different categories.
"The Colfax community and area businesses have been very generous in supporting the DYW of Colfax program scholarships," stated co-chairs Connie Ellis and Joanne Eng.
They acknowledged donating twice in one calendar year, especially during a pandemic, can be a strain. Businesses can donate and have the pledge collected in March.
Sponsorship donations are even more critical this year as there will no ticket sales, which also generates scholarship money, according to organizers.
Businesses or individuals wanting to donate to the scholarship fund are can do so via a check payable to DYW of Colfax Scholarship Fund mailed to P.O. Box 44, Colfax.
