Deputies warn of Medicare scam

Series: Crime Briefs | Story 37

COLFAX — Local law enforcement have received reports of a new scam with a caller posing as a Medicare representative.

According to police, a resident called Whitman and Latah counties’ sheriff’s offices after receiving a call from someone posing as a Medicare representative.

The resident was told Medicare was updating its information and needed his name and card number. When he resisted, multiple “supervisors” tried to convince him to give the number; “very pushy” all the time, the intended victim, who is in his 70s, told The Gazette.

“Never give your information out,” Whitman County Undersheriff Chris Chapman said, noting medical insurance companies already have the information scammers are asking for.

Residents who receive such a call are advised by Chapman to hang up and call the company on a phone number you know is valid.
