One killed in crash

PULLMAN - One person was killed and three injured Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle, head-on crash five miles south of the city on U.S. Highway 195.

Edward F. Meyer, 82, of Genesee, Idaho, was pronounced dead at the scene near Gimlin Road at about 2:30 p.m., the Washington State Patrol reported.

Emma E. Cook, 18, of Kamiah, Idaho, and Hester M. Cook, 44, and Samantha J. Stang, 18, both of Ranier, Wash., were injured and transported to a regional medical center, the patrol said. Their conditions were not available at press time.

The crash occurred near Milepost 17 when Meyer's southbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 2001 Ford Excursion driven by Emma Cook, the patrol reported.

Witnesses told troopers they saw the white pickup truck cross the centerline and hit the teenager's black SUV.

The impact caused the Excursion to overturn and come to rest on the northbound edge of the roadway. The Silverado came to a halt on the highway.

The patrol closed the highway for nearly four hours as they and Whitman County Coroner Annie Pillers reviewed the crash scene.

Southbound traffic was detoured into Pullman via South Grand Avenue.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash, the patrol said, citing the cause as driving over the centerline.

Myers Auto Rebuild and Towing removed both vehicles from the crash scene, the patrol said. Both were destroyed in the head-on impact.
