Series: Good Old Days | Story 9

Two new grade school buildings in the Colfax system, on or near the present sites, were strongly advocated by a group representing the Parent-Teacher Association in attendance at the school board’s organization meeting Monday afternoon.

The plan presented was in opposition to the proposal for one central building on the site of the present high school building, said to be favored by some of the board members and other school patrons of the district.

Urging the two-building plan were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Looney, Mrs. Wm. T. Nowel, Mrs. Guy W. Streamer, Mrs. Fred Mader, Mrs. Allen Lacey, E.A. Hochsprung and Dana McCroskey, who also asked the board to speed up the building program as fast as possible. Board members gave the petitioners no answer at that time indicating definite and formal action would be taken next week.

Centralizing the grade schools into the present high school building would necessitate construction of the new high school building first, a procedure that has been generally opposed by the P.T.A. because it considers new grade buildings a greater necessity.

Plans for a new high school building on the Morton Street site, prepared by George Rasque, Spokane architect, were on display at the board meeting.
