Serving Whitman County since 1877
OLYMPIA — Washington’s Office of the Secretary of State is calling for nominations for the state’s Medals of Merit and valor.
The statutory civilian decorations are considered the highest civilian honors awarded in Washington given to recognize individuals’ outstanding service for the state and its residents.
The Medal of Valor is for people who have attempted to save, or saved the life of someone else by putting their own safety at risk.
“Washingtonians accomplish amazing things, serve and better their communities in many ways, and commit selfless acts of bravery every day,” stated Secretary Wyman. “I am grateful for the honor of serving on the state medal committee and celebrating the incredible people who inspire all of us to live better lives.”
A state medal committee chooses recipients. The committee includes the governor, lieutenant governor, speaker of the state House of Representatives and chief justice of the state Supreme Court.
Honorees are presented their medals during a special joint session of the state Legislature.
For more information, contact the office of the secretary of state.
Deadline for nominations is Oct. 15.
