Colton baseball Senior Day celebrated with first win

Rain causes second game cancelation

COLTON – The Colton Wildcats celebrated Senior Day with their first win of the season, beating Liberty Christian 15-5 on April 24.

“It was exciting for our first win of the season,” said Colton Coach Steve Judy. “The guys were really happy we got the win. We steadily tried to improve and this shows we can have discipline at the plate and put it all together.”

The win at home was during Senior Day for the Wildcats. Their three seniors are Kelton Devlin, Trent Druffel, and Austin Jones. The team conducted a presentation with the players’ families.

The victory removes the winless tag for the team as they are now 1-9.

Colton’s starting pitcher was Jones as he threw for four innings with seven strikeouts and two earned runs. Junior Jaxon Moehrle finished the game for the Wildcats.

“My favorite moment in the entire game is that we only had three errors,” said Judy.

The Wildcats had a strong game at the plate.

“Everyone that played in that game got on base by a hit or a walk,” said Judy. “The third inning was the big inning when we scored 8 runs.”

Wildcats’ Jones had 3 hits and Kane Weiker hit a homerun in the third inning, driving in two runners.

“Weiker said it was the first time he hit it out of the infield,” said Judy.

The second game was rained out. It was about 40 degrees and began to get too wet to pitch. It was ended by the umpire with an out in the top of the fourth inning when the Patriots led 20-4.

A change in pitching combined with the weather created an uphill struggle for the Wildcats.

Since neither team is in contention to play in the post season they aren’t allowed to make the game up.

Colton’s next game is against Asotin on Saturday in Pomeroy.
