Pomeroy Pirates two wins from Colton Wildcats

COLTON – Colton was looking for their first win of the season against Pomeroy until errors changed the momentum allowing the Pirates to sweep the doubleheader.

The Colton Wildcats (0-9) lost games, 22-4 and 12-8 on April 20.

First game ended after three innings because the Pomeroy Pirates led by 15.

“It was just a lot of errors and quite a few walks,” said Coach Steve Judy. “It was our inability to get it over the plate.”

Colton pitcher Kane Weiker started the game and Trent Druffel stepped in, then. Lane Peters came in to throw one pitch. They had 9 walks.

Wildcats senior Austin Jones and freshman Liam Orfe each had a hit. The others were walks.

The second game had Colton leading until the last inning, where Pomeroy moved ahead to win 12-8.

“We led for the whole game,” said Judy. “Our starting pitcher, who was Austin Jones, reached his pitch count and then walks and errors came back to haunt us.”

Jones had nine strikeouts and two walks in five and two-thirds innings. He had two outs when he stepped off the mound when he reached his pitch count. Pitchers can only throw 105 pitches in a game.

They were leading 8-4 going into the seventh inning then Pomeroy score eight runs.

“That was a difficult one, when we gave up that many in the seventh. It made it difficult,” said Judy. “It changed the momentum. We had it going into the seventh.”

The wildcats had runners on first and third with no outs, then a base running error cost Colton an out and a botched attempt to steal a base was the third out. Both errors were by freshmen and ended the game.

“It’s a learning experience,” Judy said. “It’s tough, but we are learning.”
