Serving Whitman County since 1877
Club operates on limited schedule
COLFAX — The Colfax Eagles club remains and the building re-opened Wednesday.
Closed since April 17 as members reckoned with whether to close the charter and sell the building, they decided at a meeting Sunday afternoon to continue.
“I felt like it went a little bit better than expected,” said Galen McGraw, club president.
“We will try with a new concept,” said Lilian Fry, a trustee and the club/bar operation’s now former manager.
The new arrangement eliminates the manager’s role, thus any payroll, and assigns each of the five AERIE trustees an area of responsibility for the building and the bar inside. The trustees are managing the bar.
An estimated 25 people, including the club’s Grand Agent, representing the state Eagles organization, attended the two-hour meeting at the Colfax Main Street building.
A new Joker Poker pot begins this Friday, starting at $500.
The new hours for the club will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5 p.m. until bartender’s discretion. It will be open until at least 8 p.m. Sunday hours will be 1 p.m. to at least 4 p.m.
Roles for individual trustees, for both the club and the bar, will include responsibilities such as ordering and stocking, cleaning, managing the bartenders, running Facebook advertising and communications and acting as liaison to local businesses and more.
“This is a whole new setup. It will take time to work out the details,” said Fry. “The biggest challenge is making sure different parts keep doing the things they are assigned.”
The Colfax AERIE is looking to add a new secretary, who will handle taxes and other matters.
“We just need to remain open (and need) a lot of support from the community and members,” Fry said. “Without that, we will be in the same situation very soon.”
“I’m tentatively optimistic,” said McGraw.
