Extorting WSU student ends with prison

COLFAX — A Georgia man was sentenced to 15 months in prison for threatening to expose a woman’s nude photos if she didn’t send him more.

Jordan Bowen, 24, of Newman, Georgia, pled guilty on April 30 in Whitman County Superior Court to extortion in the second degree with sexual motivation. He was sentenced to more than a year in prison, three years of court supervision, and is required to register as a sex offender.

“After serving his prison time here, Mr. Bowen will return to Georgia where he faces more prison time,” said Whitman County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Dan LeBeau.

Due to the investigation, Bowen faced charges of possession of child pornography in his home state.

Bowen obtained nude photos of a female Washington State University (WSU) student. He created two fake online identities and made contact with her through social media, said LeBeau.

“Mr. Bowen proved to the woman that he had the revealing photos and threatened to send them to her friends and family if she did not send him more nude photos,” said LeBeau. “The woman refused to do so and reported him to the social media company … then reported the case to the WSU police.”

An investigation by WSU police Sgt. Matt Kuhrt and a police sergeant in Newman, Georgia, gathered evidence of the extortion and Bowen’s reported possession of child pornography.

“To any person who feels they may be the victim of this type of crime, we strongly encourage you to report the case to local law enforcement,” said LeBeau. “This type of predatory behavior can be stopped and the perpetrators brought to justice, and hopefully the healing can begin for the survivors
