Location for playoffs could be in Colfax
SPANGLE — The Colfax High School baseball team swept Liberty on Saturday to secure the No. 1 seed for a four-team district playoff set for Friday.
It concludes the season as no state playoffs take place.
Colfax (11-3) beat Liberty 19-5 and 13-1.
Sophomore Mason Gilchrist hit the Bulldogs' first home run of the year over the left-field fence in the fifth inning. His team was up 8-0 with two runners on.
"I was hoping to get a 10-run rule to save some pitches," said Coach Scott Parrish. "It worked out."
In game one, Layne Gingerich had three hits and eight RBIs. Others with multiple hits included J.D. Peterson, McCoy Nelson, Kyle Dail, Sam Kopp, and Kit Hockett.
On the mound, Hockett pitched three innings in the first game for the win, followed by Gilchrist for two. In the second game, Kopp got the complete-game win.
"Our pitchers, they did a good job throwing strikes and getting us back in the dugout," Parrish said.
Eric Akesson led at-bat in the second game with two base hits and a double, while Gingerich, Dail, Gilchrist, and Anthony Becker delivered two hits each. In the second game, freshman J.P. Wigen got his first varsity hit.
The team prepares for the four-team league playoff, to include the top two teams from the north and the top two from the south.
"It's kind of crazy that the season's almost over but getting 14 games in is pretty good," Parrish said. "If we get through this week and get 16, it's not bad given the circumstances."
No time or place has been decided for the playoffs, though Parrish said there was a good chance it will be held in Colfax. Athletic directors are expected to announce plans this week.
