Colfax boys basketball defense hands Davenport first loss

John Lustig and Damian Demler add 38 points

DAVENPORT-The Gorillas ran into their toughest test against the now-healthy Bulldogs, and Colfax handed Davenport its first loss of the season 64-51.

Key contributors John Lustig and Damian Demler returned for Colfax and led the way with 22 and 16 points apiece.

Colfax took an early lead and led 14-9 after one quarter. They extended the lead to 17-9 on a Lustig 3-pointer, but Davenport responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead 18-17. Colfax called a timeout and responded with a 10-0 run of its own.

Davenport never held the lead again and struggled to match Colfax's intensity.

"This is sort of a measuring stick game for us," Davenport Coach Matt Henry said. "We wanted to see what we looked like against one of the better teams in the league, and they showed us what a better team in the league does defensively."

Defensively, the Bulldogs honed in on Davenport's top two players, Tennesee Rainwater and Brenick Soliday. Rainwater finished with 16 points but couldn't convert a 3-pointer, while Soliday was just 3-for-10 from the field and held to a season-low 7 points.

"Those two were definitely our focus. Those guys have put up some big numbers this year," Colfax Coach Reece Jenkin said. "The best we could do was try to limit their opportunities, and they had some other kids step up and make some big plays, but I thought, for the most part, we did a decent job ... of trying to limit their opportunities the best we can."

The largest disparities were seen on the glass and at the foul line. Colfax out rebounded Davenport 41-28 and shot 20 free throws to Davenport's 11. Both teams shot 40% from the field.

Davenport's Jaeger Jacobsen provided 13 points off the bench for a season-high.

Colfax's Seth Lustig scored 15 points.

The Bulldogs improved to 2-2 with the win, while Davenport fell to 4-1.
