Comprehensive plan update underway

Plan covers county services, facilities, land use, utilities

COLFAX - The Whitman County Comprehensive Plan is being updated.

The comprehensive plan is a guiding document for all zoning codes, covers land use, transportation, public services, economic development, public services, parks, trails and recreation, facilities, and utilities.

The Whitman County Planning Department held a virtual open house on Wednesday night to update progress on a revamp of the e plan, which has not been renewed since 1978.

The plan is being updated for a Whitman County population of 50,480 residents, which marks a 13% increase since 2010.

"We've got a framework. Now we're filling in some of the details," said Alan Thomson, county planner.

The project began Jan. 6 and expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Two elements discussed were transportation and parks and recreation.

The meeting was attended by 21 people, including county Commissioner Tom Handy. About a dozen public comments were gathered.

"When (the consultants) have something different to show us, we'll have a meeting," Thompson said.

The next meetings are set for June 16 and June 30.
