County assessor Robin Jones dies

She lost battle with cancer on June 5

COLFAX - Whitman County Assessor Robin Jones died early Saturday morning, June 5, of cancer.

She was 48.

Jones worked for 27 years in the assessor's office, serving as assessor since her appointment in 2017 and election to a four-year term in 2018.

County Commissioner Art Swannack read a statement at a commissioners meeting. Signed by him and fellow commissioners Michael Largent and Tom Handy, Swannack noted Jones' "work ethic and (her) energetic and joyful presence."

Jones' daughter, Rian, graduated Saturday with the Colfax High School class of 2021.

Commissioners approved Laurie Miller, a supervisor in the assessor's office, to step in as interim assessor. Superior Court Judge Gary Libey swore Miller into office.

"I have a lot to live up to, that's all I can say," said Miller.

She holds the position until someone is appointed by commissioners.

The Whitman County Republican party nominates three candidates for the position because Jones was a Republican.

"It's a serious blow to the county as an organization and all the family and friends that knew her," said Largent.
