Garfield-Palouse seniors receive scholarships, awards

GARFIELD — Seventeen Garfield-Palouse graduating seniors received numerous scholarships.

Here are the scholarships and awards for the students, according to Diane Mylett, a counselor at Garfield-Palouse High School.

Jacob Anderson received the Garfield-Palouse Athletic Club ($250), Palouse Grain Growers ($250), Garfield Community Church, Garfield Christian Fellowship, Palouse Federated Church, and GarPal YoungLife: Life Lessons Award ($250, Katrina Thompson Scholarship ($1,000), Garfield-Palouse FFA Memorial Scholarship ($1,000), Garfield-Palouse Classified Association ($200) and was offered the presidential scholarship at Eastern Washington University (EWU) of $3,000 per year for four years.

Anderson is attending Walla Walla Community College.

Garrett Blomgren received the Palouse Lions Club ($1,500) and the Life Lessons Award ($250).

Blomgren is attending Northwest Lineman College.

Tovah Brantner received the Garfield-Palouse Distinguished Young Women scholarships totaling $2,900, which is three separate awards of $1,650 for being the top competitor, $700 for the interview category, and $550 for the talent category. Brantner also received Experience Washington State University (WSU) scholarship ($1,000), WSU academic scholarship ($5,500), and offered scholarships to the University of Idaho and Central Washington University (CWU) totaling $20,084.

Brantner is attending WSU.

Christian Burt received the Life Lessons Award ($250), Chapter AE, P.E.O. Scholarship ($500), offered an academic scholarship to Michigan State University ($15,000) per year for four years, and accepted the Arizona Distinction Award $35,000 per year for four years to attend the University of Arizona, Washington Honors Award for ranking in the top 10% of the graduating class in the state of Washington, John Phillips Sousa Award, Johns Hopkins Center for talented youth grand honors award, Congress-Bundestag Youth exchange scholarship, National rural and small-town recognition for his performance on the PSAT, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout

Burt is attending the University of Arizona.

Paige Collier received the Life Lessons Award ($250), Garfield-Palouse Athletic Club ($250), Xenodican Club ($500), Viking Crew ($250), Palouse Lions Club ($1,500), Living Scholarship of Ben Perkins ($750), and Gayle Whealy Johnstone scholarship ($1,000).

Collier is attending Studio Academy of Beauty.

Byran Ethan Cook received the Katrina Thompson Scholarship ($1,000), Garfield-Palouse Audio/Visual Club ($500), Life Lessons Award ($250), Palouse Grain Growers: Bruce Baldwin Memorial Scholarship ($1,000), Xenodican Club ($500), Garfield-Palouse Performing Arts Booster Club ($500), Central Washington University presidential scholarship ($5,000), CWU early access scholarship ($500), and offered scholarships to Whitworth University and EWU totaling $99,600.

Cook is attending Central Washington University.

Robert Drake Davis received the Life Lessons Award ($250) and is attending the Workforce Training Program at Lewis-Clark State College.

Kaleb Gibler received the Life Lessons Award ($250).

Austin Jones received the Life Lessons Award ($250), Health Care Careers Scholarship sponsored by Chris and Brenda Cook in honor of Joann Carol Cook ($1,000), State Bank Northwest Memorial Scholarship ($500), Palouse Grain Growers ($250), Alli Bennett Memorial Scholarship ($500), Chapter IO, P.E.O. Scholarship ($500), Garfield-Palouse FFA Boosters Club ($1,000), Katrina Thompson Scholarship ($2,500), Ellis and Neta Schaffer Memorial Scholarship ($20), Whitman County Principals' Association ($400), Garfield-Palouse HS NHS Alumni ($500), Colfax Thrifty Grandmothers' ($1,000), Viking Crew ($250), Megistanis Award offered through the Gar-Pal Cross-Country Program in partnership with Chris and Brenda Cook, in honor of Joann Carol Cook ($500), National Honor Society Scholarship ($3,200), Ben Carson Scholarship ($1,000), J Hubert Scruggs scholarship ($1,000) per year for four years, Fair Chance Scholarship ($3,000), WA State School Retirees Association scholarship ($2,500), Grow Ag Leaders (National FFA) ($1,500), Lambeth Family scholarship ($2,000) per year for four years, Grange insurance association scholarship ($1,000), University of Alabama academic scholarship ($33,500) per year for four years, University of Alabama Engineering Department ($2,500) per year for four years, offered scholarships to Whitworth University, WSU and the University of Washington totaling $163,100, William F. Halpin Award for Math and Science, Washington Honors Award for ranking in the top 10% of the graduating class in the state of Washington, National Merit Commended National Scholar, and College Board Rural/Small Town National Scholar.

Jones is attending the University of Alabama.

Olivia Knauff received the Round Table Club ($1,000), Cascade Aircraft Conversions ($500), Garfield-Palouse Education Association ($600), Life Lessons Award ($250), ASB Memorial Scholarship ($350), and Garfield-Palouse Distinguished Young Women scholarships ($2,000).

Knauff is attending the Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology.

Danny Laughary received the Steve Cocking Memorial Scholarship ($250), SACK ($250), Garfield-Palouse Education Association ($600), Chapter IO, P.E.O. Scholarship ($500), Megistanis Award ($500), Life Lessons Award ($250), ASB Memorial Scholarship ($350) Community Scholarship: Garfield-Palouse Performing Arts Booster Club ($500), Harvard Faculty Scholarship ($70,878) per year for four years, and offered scholarships to Yale University, Columbia University, Princeton University and Whitworth University totaling $940,424.

Laughary is attending Harvard College.

Jacob Maurin received the Life Lessons Award ($250) and is attending Anvil Welding School.

Rachel Meeuwsen received the Life Lessons Award ($250) and Garfield-Palouse Distinguished Young Women scholarship ($250).

Meeuwsen is joining the US military.

Ethan Montgomery received Life Lessons Award ($250) and is joining the U.S. Navy.

Rielee Renne received the Life Lessons Award ($250) and Garfield-Palouse Distinguished Young Women scholarship ($1,425).

Renne is attending Walla Walla Community College.

Miranda Richards received the Palouse Grain Growers ($250), Life Lessons Award ($250), Eastern Washington University Deans scholarship ($2,000) per year for four years, EWU Academic Honors Scholarship ($1,000) per year for four years, and offered scholarships to Whitworth University ($90,000).

Richards is attending Eastern Washington University.
