Dec. 20, 1932 – July 7, 2021
Geneva 'Gene' Linde (Carroll) Brannan, age 88, of Walla Walla, Washington, passed away on July 7, 2021.
Gene was born to John Fabian Carroll and Geneva (Lindburg) Carroll on December 20, 1932, in Colfax, Wash. Gene was from a large family of 10 girls and two boys, attending all her school years in the Colfax schools. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1950.
Gene attended college at Eastern Washington in Cheney, but left school and returned to Colfax to marry Harlan Brannan on July 14, 1951. This was the beginning of a long partnership that lasted for over 59 years, until Harlan's death in 2010.
In the early years of her life, after marriage and starting a family, she spent her time being a mother, wife, cooking for harvest crews and running to town for parts and supplies. As the kids got older and things on the farm changed with advanced equipment, Gene and Harlan both found many other activities to occupy their time.
Gene could always be found in the upper bleachers watching her children participate in sports and other school activities. She valued education and went back to college at Washington State University and took classes that "interested" her. Gene was an avid reader all her life. The Bookmobile was a weekly trek for her and the five kids during the summer. Her love of reading has been passed down through the generations, to her children, her grandchildren and now her great-grandchildren. Each generation has a number of avid readers.
Gene and Harlan started traveling and spending time in Hawaii in the winter months in the mid 1970s. They both grew to love their time in Hawaii and seemed to extend their time there every year. After retirement in 1983, Harlan and Gene lived in Sequim, Wash .; Walla Walla, Wash. and Twin Lakes, Idaho, for periods of time, they finally, in 2000 moved to Hawaii to live full time. Gene moved back to the mainland after Harlan's death to be closer to her family.
Gene took up golf in her mid-years. She was credited with four holes in one during the years she played at the various golf clubs. She enjoyed participating in many golf events, playing tournaments with Harlan and her children.
She began playing Bridge in the early '90s, becoming a Club Master after earning enough Grand Master points to qualify.
Gene is survived by her children, Jo Ann Olson (Walla Walla, WA), Robert and Sigrid Brannan (Spokane, WA), Carroll Brannan (Spokane, WA), Scott and Robin Brannan (Green Valley, AZ), and Randall and Marylou Brannan (Kirkland, WA); nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Gene is also survived by her sisters, Helen Deal (Auburn, WA), Katherine Conley (Seattle, WA), Elizabeth 'Betty' Madsen (Haden Lake, ID), and Judith Rice (Sunnyside, WA).
She was predeceased by her husband Harlan Brannan, her parents, John 'Fabe' and Geneva Carroll, her brothers, John Carroll, Charles 'Chuck' Carroll and Marvin Carroll and her sisters, Barbara Carroll, Shirley Galloway, Dorothy Grigsby and Susan Chase.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to the charity of your choice. Pursuant to Gene's request there will be no funeral or memorial service.
