Serving Whitman County since 1877

Dusty news

News has been received of the passing of Brownie Jean Mortlock, 95, on July 25th at her home in Kettle Falls. She was the wife of the late pastor Earl Mortlock of the Country Bible Church 1965 - 1967. They had ten children, 26 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. A private family gathering will be held in her honor. She will be buried in Reardan, WA alongside her husband and mother.

Murphy Nolan was a guest of her great great aunt Karen Broeckel from July 30 to August 2. She helped serve lunch to harvesters, fed Ritz crackers to Angela Broeckel’s goats, played with Dawson BeDell, played games and did a lot of coloring. It was a busy, fun weekend.

Local farmer and author Dan Moore has a feature in this month’s edition of “Wheat Life” magazine. It is a story, Part 1 “In the Corner of the Field” and parts 2 and 3 will follow in October and November. He is a fourth generation family farmer and the story comes from a lifetime of experiences around the farming community. The inspiration to bring all parts together in a story form came from seeing an old kitchen chair by a creek on an early spring day.

Denise Broeckel Kendall, Tacoma, returned to her home last Tuesday morning after spending three weeks being part of her brother Brian Broeckel’s harvest crew. Kendall and her sister Doreen Riedner went to Sprague on Monday to visit with high school friend Ginny Dorman Ressel. Another crew member, cousin John Allyn Murray, returned to his home in Birch Bay, WA on Sunday.
