ST. JOHN – Rain grounded the St. John-Endicott-LaCrosse (SJEL) Eagles football teram during their loss to the Touchet Indians on Sept. 10, 32-6.
"The rain was terrible," said SJEL Coach John Hergert. "It quit for halftime then sheet rain fell in the third quarter.
Rain led the Eagles' offense to shift to more running plays. It also contributed to a couple of fumbles.
SJEL's sole touchdown was in the first quarter, said Hergert. Quarterback Tanner Fleming threw a short pass to freshman Ben Bailey, who broke three tackles to run the rest of 54 yards to the 2-yard line. Tanner snuck it in across the line for the touchdown.
The following 2-point conversion attempt failed.
The Eagles' lost more than the game as two players were injured in the fourth quarter. Defensive lineman Landen Miller left with a possible concussion and a hard tackle injured Bailey's knee, said Hergert.
Touchet's players are more experienced than SJEL. The Indians struggled for a few years and now are improved and a much better team, Hergert said. The younger Eagles gained something from playing the Indians.
"Experience ... we just gain experience," he said. "We're very young. We were starting three freshmen."
