Colfax students learn bank literacy

COLFAX - Colfax High School students are learning to balance a checkbook, manage a budget, and how credit works.

The Bank of Eastern Washington is sponsoring Ramsey Solutions' "Foundations in Personal Finance" curriculum for Colfax High School.

Ramsey is a personal finance expert who created the program to teaches students the value of saving, and spending to provide them financial literacy.

"More than five million students have taken Foundations in Personal Finance in middle schools, high schools and universities nationwide. (It) can be used as a resource to fulfill requirements in mathematics, economics, family and consumer sciences, business mathematics, and personal finance," said Becky Kindle, chief operations officer of the Bank of Eastern Washington.

This year the bank is providing the program to Colfax, Pasco, and Chiawana high schools.

"This prepares them for future employment, applying for checking and savings accounts, using a credit card, and managing student college expenses, to name a few. We would love to see more schools using the Ramsey program as a supplement to their regular curriculum," said Kindle.
