Serving Whitman County since 1877
Project completion is expected in eight months
COLFAX - Whitman County departments are shuffling to accommodate the $8.9 million remodel of county facilities.
Four county offices are relocated to the Warwick building across the street from the courthouse at 409 North Main Street in Colfax. They are the assessor, auditor, treasurer, and human resources offices.
The Whitman County Public Service Building, at 310 N. Main Street, is the temporary home to the county commissioners, prosecutor's office, superior court, juvenile court, and Child Advocate Program on the first floor.
On the second floor are the department of licensing, the superior court clerk's office, and the recording department.
District court is in the old Pullman city hall on Paradise Street in Pullman.
The new location for the fair, parks, and recreation, and developmental services are with the Whitman County Sheriff's Office in Colfax.
The project replaces the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system (HVAC) and the elevator to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Asbestos is being removed from the building, lights upgraded to LEDs, and cables replaced to handle the latest information technology.
The building's electrical system is being upgraded, windows replaced to meet current energy standard, jail backup generator replaced, and the insulated padding that makes up the outside wall of the jail is being repaired and covered with metal.
The county is using $4.3 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and general fund money from the county budget to pay for the changes.
Spokane-based contractor McKinstry Company is performing the work as Whitman County Facilities Manager Brandy Dean is overseeing the project. Construction is expected to take eight months.
