COLFAX - The Colfax Bulldogs football sought to upset the Lind-Ritzville-Sprague (LRS) Broncos to make the district playoffs but came up short by one point.
The Broncos won 15-14 on Oct. 28 in Colfax.
"It was the number four ranked team and undefeated and we knew we had our hands full going into the game," said Colfax Coach Mike Morgan. "I told them to keep it close and we'll have a shot at winning this."
LRS scored first on a 35-yard pass to Hayden Melcher for the touchdown and made a successful point-after kick to lead by 7 points.
The Bulldogs came back to score a touchdown when Trentin Ensley ran 34 yards. Damian Demler threw to Mason Gilchrist for the 2-point conversion, putting Colfax ahead by one at the end of the first half, 8-7.
The Bulldogs scored in the third quarter when Demler threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to JP Wigen. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving Colfax to lead 14-7.
"That missed 2 point opportunity would be the difference in the game," said Morgan.
LRS came back in the fourth quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run by Brody Boness. The pass from Chase Galbreath to JT Kelly was good for 2 points and the Broncos moved ahead 15-14.
The game became a defensive battle with three fumbles in the last six minutes.
"They got the ball back and ran out the clock," said Morgan.
Colfax's defense performed well with grabbing three interceptions against a LRS quarterback that had thrown only two for the entire season.
"The better team won but we had an opportunity," Morgan said. "We have X amount of opportunities in a ball game and we took advantage of what was given us. They got one more big play than we did."
Colfax plays either Friday at 7 p.m. or Saturday at 1 p.m. depending on who wins the game between Tonasket and Manson. The winner plays the Bulldogs.
It is a crossover game with another district and the 10th season game for Colfax (4-5).
"Our final game ... win or lose, our season is over," said Morgan. "We hope to end on a high note."
