Uniontown suffers string of vehicle prowls

UNIONTOWN — Seven unlocked vehicles in Uniontown were entered and things were stolen, including a garage door opener, on Dec. 2.

The vehicles were parked at homes on South St. Boniface Avenue.

All were unlocked. The thefts are described as crimes of opportunities because if a vehicle was unlocked, the thieves would open it and take what they could find.

“People should lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight,” said Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers. “People parking outside and have garage door openers … keep them out of sight. I would strongly suggest to not have a garage door opener in a vehicle parked outside. It gives access to the home.”

A garage door opener stolen from a vehicle was used and two people entered the garage. The homeowner couldn’t determine if anything was stolen but told a deputy some items were moved.

A 2015 Toyota Tacoma pickup was entered and a knife was stolen, but the thief left a glove and pair of sunglasses behind.

A coin purse with about $20 of change was stolen from a 2016 Toyota Rav4 SUV.

A wallet left in a 2012 Ford Escape was stolen.

An unlocked 2015 Chevrolet Malibu led to the thieves stealing $10 in loose change.

A 2006 Toyota Highland and a 2014 Toyota Rav4 were entered but nothing was reported stolen.

In a 2007 Hyundai Sonata another glove was left behind. The knife stolen from the 2015 Toyota Tacoma pickup was found inside.

“We absolutely want to solve it,” said Myers. “We need a little bit of help from the public.”

If anyone has information about the thefts, they are asked to call the sheriff’s office at 509-397-6266.
