POMEROY — The St. John-Endicott-LaCrosse (SJEL) Eagles girls basketball team suffered a hard loss in Pomeroy 65-30 on Dec. 11.
The first quarter of the game was as close as it would get with the Pirates leading the Eagles 7-4. In the second quarter Pomeroy took off, scoring 23 points to SJEL’s 12 and the halftime score was 30-16.
“Hailee Marty went down for us in the second quarter and that took away our only answer to Keely Maves,” said Coach Jeff Gates.
Maves scored 42 points for the Pirates with 16 baskets, a 3-pointer, and 7 successful free throws. Julian Harris added 15 points with 5 baskets and 5 free throws.
Marty left the game with a single point coming from 1 of 6 free throw attempts.
The second half was Pomeroy outscoring SJEL 35-14 leading to a final score of 65-30.
SJEL’s Olivia Kjack was the team’s top scorer with 12 points 4 baskets and 4 successful free throws.
Brooklyn Bailey added 5 points for the Eagles. Bailey Brown and Chloe Stach both contributed 4 points each.
“We had some chances early, but we couldn’t get the shots to fall. We were also a little gassed from our game on Friday night,” said Gates.
The night before, SJEL hosted Oakesdale and beat the Nighthawks 37-36.
The Eagles’ scored 1 point more than the Nighthawks 10-9 in the first quarter and both teams score 16 points in the second quarter for a halftime score of 26-25. The third quarter was where SJEL added a little distance by outscoring Oakesdale 4-2 but the fourth quarter they came back to end the game only 1 point behind, 37-36.
SJEL’s Bailey scored a double-double with 19 points by sinking 4 3-pointers, 3 baskets, and 1 free throw. She also had 10 rebounds, 1 turnover, and 1 steal.
Kyra Holt added 8 points from 3 baskets and 2 successful free throws. On defense, she had 11 rebounds and 2 steals.
Kjack and Marty scored 4 points each. Kjack had 9 rebounds, a turnover and a steal. Marty had 9 rounds and a steal.
For Oakesdale, Kaylee Hinnenkamp scored 17 points, Marilla Hockett added 10 points and Lucy Hockett added 7 points.
SJEL plays Tekoa-Rosalia on Friday, Dec. 17.
Oakesdale plays again on Jan. 4 in Odessa.
