COLFAX — The Colfax girls basketball team looked like they were going to win, but Liberty (Spangle) came back hard to tie the game at 60-60, pushing it into overtime.
In overtime, the Lancers outscored the hosting Bulldogs by 3 points and that was enough to beat Colfax 65-62 on Dec. 21.
“It was a tough loss tonight, to a very good Liberty team,” said Colfax Coach Jordan Holmes. “We played three solid quarters of basketball, but just couldn’t keep the momentum going early in the fourth.”
Colfax started strong and scored 16 points in the first quarter, leading Liberty by 6. At halftime, the Bulldogs were ahead 38-24.
Coming out of the locker room, the momentum, changed. Both teams scored 14 points. It was the fourth quarter when it changed. The Lancers scored 22 points and kept the Bulldogs to 8. The buzzer sounded with a score of 60-60. Overtime went to Liberty.
“This is a game that has the potential to teach us a lot of really important lessons. We are an inexperienced group, as a whole, and I truly think we will be better tomorrow because of what happened tonight,” said Holmes.
Bulldog Asher Cai led the team by scoring 27 points from 6 baskets, 4 3-pointers, and by going 100% on free throws to add 3 more points.
Brynn McGaughy added 14 points from 7 baskets.
Jaisha Gibb contributed 13 points from 2 baskets and 3 3-pointers.
Hailey Demler hit one of each – basket, 3-pointer, and free throw – to score 6 points.
Lauryn York added 2 points.
“It still isn’t fun to lose, especially when we did so many things well, but there is a lot of season left, and I believe we will respond,” said Homes before the winter break.
