COLFAX – The Bulldogs girls basketball team posted three wins over the last two weeks, topping Asotin, Medical Lake and Mabton.
The local girls routed the Asotin Panthers, 50-16, on Jan. 4.
"It was a bit of a slow night tonight, but our girls were able to grind through it," Coach Jordan Holmes said. "Our scoring was a little different than it's been all season, but our defense was able to step up and perform well and I'm very proud of that."
Holmes is humble as her slow start was the Bulldogs scoring 17 points in the first quarter while holding Asotin to 4. At halftime Colfax led 29-8. The Bulldogs scored 21 in the second half while keeping the Panthers to 8, for a final score of 50-16.
Every Bulldog scored.
On Dec. 30, the Colfax girls basketball grounded the Medical Lake Cardinals, 58-28.
A close game at the end of the first quarter, 10-9, blew apart as the Bulldogs took a commanding lead in the second quarter by out-scoring Medical Lake 22-7, leaving the halftime score at 32-16.
Colfax's defense kept the Cardinals from catching up.
Colfax scored 13 points in both of the final two quarters to add 26 points, while Medical Lake added 12 in the second half.
"Asher Cai led all scorers again tonight with great shooting from the field," Holmes said. "She's one of the best shooters I've seen or coached."
Cai scored 28 points from 6 baskets, 5 3-pointers, and a free thrown.
Brynn McGaughy added 9 points from 3 baskets and 3 free throws.
Jaisha Gibb added 8 points from 1 basket and 2 3-pointers.
"Hannah Baerlocher stepped up and led our team on the defensive end of the floor tonight," Holmes said. "Both seniors are settling into their roles as leaders and our team is better because of it."
Cai also lead the team to a 79-46 win over the Mabton Vikings on Dec. 29.
"Cai played a steady game on both ends of the floor to help lead our team," Holmes said. "She scored a well-rounded 39 points to lead all scorers on the night."
She scored 39 points from 9 baskets, 6 3-pointers, and 3 successful free throws.
The game was the closest at the end of the first quarter when Colfax was leading 21-16. By halftime, the lead grew larger to 42-26.
"Our bench came in and played a great second half," Holmes said. "Olivia Andrus and Ava Swan had valuable minutes coming off the bench."
The Bulldogs' offense kept firing on all cylinders in the third quarter adding 28 points while their defense kept Mabton to 8 points. When the final buzzer sounded, Colfax won 79-46.
"It was great to see our kids play good defense in the second half of the game. Overall this was a great team win," said Holmes.
Brynn McGaughy scored 15 points from 7 baskets and a free throw.
Jaisha Gibb added 9 points from 3 baskets and a 3-pointer.
Andrus hit every shot she threw with a basket and 2 free throws for 4 points.
