Eagles win one, lose one

Boys fall to Liberty Christian; girls top Tekoa-Rosalia

ST. JOHN — The St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse basketball teams notched a win and loss during the last week.

The boys fell to Liberty Christian, 62-50, on Saturday, Jan. 8; while the girls topped county rival Tekoa-Rosalia, 50-22, on Jan. 4.

In the boys matchup, Liberty Christian’s J. Bensoon led all scorers with 27 points; the Eagles’ Tanner Fleming posted 23, with Rory Maloney adding 13.

“I’m very proud of our effort and tenacity tonight,” Coach Michael Stubbs said following the game. “We continue to show improvement on a weekly basis , that will hopefully lead to more success as we move into the second half of our schedule.”

The game was tied at 27 at halftime, but Liberty Christian took a slight lead to end the third with a 40-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Eagles were still down by 3 points with just over 3 minutes left in the game.

“We missed a couple shots and they made a couple shots, plus a few free throws at the end for the final score,” Stubbs said. “A hard fought game, where we make a couple shots and they don’t, and the outcome would have been different.

Eagles 50, Timberwolves 22

Individual stats weren’t reported for the girls matchup between the Eagles and the Timberwolves.

“We were rusty in the first quarter, but played well the rest of the way,” Tekoa-Rosalia Coach Jeff Gates said.

“Brooklyn Bailey was big for us on both ends of the floor,” Gates said. “Hailee Marty hit some shots for us early and Avery Fleming had 10 boards coming off the bench.”

Kate Hergert also had three nice blocks, he said.
