Girls wrestle at North Subregionals

Tekoa-Rosalia grappler an alternate to regional tourney

SPANGLE - One Whitman County girl is headed to the regional wrestling tournament, but may not be competing.

Tekoa-Rosalia freshman Alexis Taylor qualified as an alternate to the tournament slated for Saturday at Ephrata High School by finishing sixth in the North Girls Subregional tournament on Feb. 5 at Liberty (Spangle) High School.

As an alternate, Taylor will have to weigh in and be ready to replace a wrestler in her 145-pound class who drops out due to being ill or who doesn't make weight.

At subregionals, Taylor, a No. 2 seed, opened with a bye, then pinned Jenna Reeder of Cashmere in 2:47 to advance to the quarterfinals, where she ran into No. 3-seeded Amy Myers of Okanogan. Myers, a junior, pinned Taylor in 13 seconds, sending Whitman County's highest ranking wrestler to the consolation round.

She would lose her next two matches by pin, to Megan Tapia of Wahluke in 29 seconds and to Alba Palacios of Quincy in 3:41 to finish sixth.

Taylor was the only freshman in the weight class.

Her efforts earned the Timberwolves 9 team points, good enough for a 33rd place finish.

Colfax finished 34th with 4 team points; and Garfield-Palouse tied for 38th without earning any team points.

The Othello girls won the team title with 228.5 points, followed by Quincy with 128 and Moses Lake with 113.

In addition to Taylor, Arianna "Jesse" Casey competed for the Timberwolves.

At 135 pounds, Casey opened with a loss by pin to Diamond Van Cleve of Othello in 1:28, received and bye and then was pinned by Brianna Smith of Mary Walker in 4:00.

Colfax's Sydney Sisk competed at 115 pounds.

She opened with a loss by pin to Othello's Grace Rocha, then received a bye before pinning Maira Yanet Zaragoza of Warden in 20 seconds.

She was eliminated from the tournament after being pinned by Vaea LaMoureax in 2:49.

For Garfield-Palouse, Laynie Southern opened with a loss in the 125-pound class after being pinned by Dixie Williams of Tonaskekt in 1:50.

Southern received a second-round bye, then was eliminated by Lauren Jenks of Royal, who pinned her in 34 seconds.
