Antique tractor drive to tour county this Saturday

JOHNSON – The Lewis-Clark Antique Power Club returns for its annual tractor drive Saturday, May 21, through Whitman County.

Starting at 9:30 a.m., a caravan of antique tractors will depart from Johnson Schoolhouse.

“The guys have refurbished all these old tractors,” Early Days Gas Engine and Tractor Association President Judith Durfey said. “They load them in and take off on this all day drive.”

The antique tractors will drive from Johnson, through the Palouse Hills, and along the breaks of the Snake River.

“They normally head west outside of Johnson. It’s usually a circular drive,” she said. “Some of them [the tractors] are from the 1940s. Most of the things that the club has restored are 60 years old.

“People are welcome to come and look at the tractors before they head out. You can probably catch a glimpse of them every now and then,” she noted.

The group normally displays antique tractors and objects at fairs.

“It’s a part of our educational focus. It’s fun but it’s also educational. We try to get our antique irons out in the public so they can see how things used to be and show them how they run. ”

Participants in the tractor drive must be members of the Early Days Gas Engine and Tractor Association.

“We are always welcoming new members for people who want to participate, if they have an interest in old iron to come join us,” Durfey said.
