Memorial Day observance planned for Colfax Cemetery

COLFAX — Flags will be flying throughout Whitman County this weekend as area residents observe Memorial Day.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Future Farmers of America will be putting out more than 300 flags on veterans’ graves in the city cemetery, 804 state Highway 272, before the weekend begins.

“The flags and crosses are a symbol of our honor and remembrance of our national heroes,” a press release said.

On Monday, May 30, at the cemetery, there will be a Memorial Day observance recognizing and remembering the efforts of veterans.

In other observances, the Garfield American Legion will host an 11 a.m. ceremony Monday, May 30, in the Garfield cemetery off Elberton Road.

Following the observance, there will be a by-donation lunch at the G. Raymond McCown American Legion Post No. 24 hall, 211 E. Main St.

Scrapbooks of those who served from the area will be available to view, organizers said.

In St. John, volunteers will be putting flags on veterans’ graves at the cemetery, as well.

In Colton, the Stars and Stripes will be flying along U.S. Highway 195.

Neither St. John nor Colton are planning any official observance.
