Serving Whitman County since 1877
Sept. 2, 1959 to June14, 2021
Jon Milton Hill was a beloved son, brother, husband, cousin, uncle, and great-uncle. He left this world suddenly June 14, 2021, at the age of 61.
Jon was born Sept. 2, 1959, to Leonard and Mary Hill of Colfax, Wash. He was the youngest of seven children - his siblings: Ronald Bartlett, Robert Hensley, Stephen Hensley, Marguerite Hensley, Marc Hensley and David Hill.
Jon graduated from Colfax High School in 1978.
He enlisted in US Army soon after graduation and served honorably for five years. His Military Occupational Specialty code was 13 BRAVO, cannon crew member. He rapidly advanced in rank and received multiple decorations. In December 1981, he became a drill sergeant at Fort Sill, Okla.
When he separated from the Army, he worked as a landscaper, then attended and graduated from the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School. He became a professional gunsmith, specializing in stock-making.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, fly-tying, leather working, woodworking and knife-making.
He loved animals and was often finding strays to adopt. He made friends easily and was a well respected man.
Jon is survived by brothers, Stephen Hensley of Salem, Ill., and David Hill of Cheyenne Wyo .; multiple cousins, nephews, nieces, great nephews; and great-nieces. Jon was preceded in death by his father, Leonard, in 2000; mother, Mary, in 2006; sister, Marguerite, in 2013; and brothers, Robert in 2014, and Marc in 2018.
Jon's wonderful wife of 29 years, Gwendolyn Kay Hill, passed away Aug. 31, 2020, and he was devastated by her loss. His brother, Ronald, passed away June 28, 2021.
His wife, Gwendolyn; mom and dad; sister, Marguerite; and brothers, Robert and Marc; met Jon at the gates of Heaven to give him a tour and get him settled in. When Ronald got up to Heaven the family got together again and got him squared away, as well.
Jon will be missed something awful, but Stephen and I find comfort that when the Lord calls us home we will all be together again. Rest in peace, little brother.
Jon has been cremated; his ashes - along with those of his wife, Gwendolyn - will be laid to rest at our father's grave in Colfax in a private ceremony. A Celebration of Life ceremony for Jon and Gwendolyn (with full military honors for Jon) will be the afternoon of June 12, 2022, at Wilcox Grange Hall. For directions, call Cindy Ziegler at 509-595-2796.
