Serving Whitman County since 1877
COLFAX - A recent graduate has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Whitman County Association of Realtors.
Katherine Izette Tate, 17, of Colfax, received the award for her civic and social activities, letters of recommendation and grade-point average, as well as a written essay on her educational goals and possible challenges.
Belinda Huntsman, Deputy CEO and Chief Financial Officer of the Whitman County Association of Realtors, credits Tate's award to involvement in FCCLA.
"Keeping a 3.9 GPA and having that involvement at a state and regional level is impressive for an 18 year old," she said.
The recipient of the award must be enrolled full-time at Washington State University and earn a certain number of points based on GPA and community involvement.
"My counselor at Colfax High School was really pushing scholarships," Tate said. "I was only one of two students attending WSU from Colfax and I just applied."
In her FCCLA chapter, Tate held the position of public relations officer and in the state level she was vice president of her region, state secretary and vice president of finance.
Tate also was in National Honors Society, a varsity cheerleader and competed in the Distinguished Young Woman contest.
