Serving Whitman County since 1877
COLFAX – For nearly a decade the City of Colfax has worked towards the goal of completing an urban trail through our downtown corridor. Such a trail has held high priority through the past two mayoral administrations; and over the years city staff have worked tirelessly with WSDOT, the National Park Service, county and state legislatures, WSU student design groups, and others, to realize this dream. The project recently gained new energy in the form of an anonymous donation in the amount of $100,000; and the formation of “citizens interest group” dedicated to this goal. We – The City of Colfax mayor and staff, City Council, Parks Board and Department, Colfax Friends of the Parks, and the Greenway Citizens Committee – are united in our desire to provide a safe, beautiful, and sustainable central trail way to the citizen of our community
A “Greenway Trail” is defined as a shared-use trail along a strip of undeveloped land, in an urban or rural area, set aside for recreational use or environmental protection. In Colfax, this trail would initially run from Cooper Street at Ace Hardware along the west side of the river to terminate at Eells Park. The result would be a safe, quiet alternative pathway for school children, walkers and bicyclist through the majority of the downtown Colfax corridor. Being a major highway, parts of Main street are less than safe for children, senior citizens and general pedestrians. Other benefits to the community include strengthening the local economy, protecting the environment and encouraging physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
