William "Bill" Hughes, Jr., 91, longtime Endicott, Washington resident passed away August 26, 2022 at Sunrise Garden Adult Family Home in Pullman, WA. Bill was born December 11, 1930 in Lexington, Virginia to William & Ruby (Ramsey) Hughes.
The family moved to Washington, settling at Union Flat where Bill grew up. It was during his growing up years that he learned how to fly airplanes.
Following high school he studied photography in Chicago, IL before joining the U.S. Army. He served his country during the Korean War spending time in Germany. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Bill served for eight years in the Army Reserves.
He married Mary Jo Weitz on May 19, 1951 in Endicott, WA and together they have made Endicott their home, where he started working for a farmer upon his return from the service.
Bill operated a repair shop in town for a time. He later went to work for BEK in LaCrosse where he spent many years as a mechanic, working on all sorts of farm implements. Bill was a member of the Endicott Fire Department, serving as chief on several occasions. Bill spent many years as well as an EMT in Endicott.
He later trained to be a fire instructor, teaching area firefighters. He was a member of the Endicott Bible Church. Bill enjoyed flying remote control model airplanes, going to airshows and was a WWII airplane buff. He also dabbled in genealogy when he had a chance.
Bill was a very loving and caring husband and father who will be missed. He is survived by his son William Scott Hughes, Sr. of Pullman, WA and two grandsons William Scott Hughes, Jr. and Daniel Duncan both of Lewiston, ID.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at the Endicott Bible Church. Vault interment will follow at the Endicott Cemetery.
