Oakesdale opens season with win

The Oakesdale Nighthawks opened their season picking up right where they left off with the 2021 season: a win.

Oakesdale (1-0) beat Mary Walker 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-17) on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Jessie Reed led the team with 10 digs. She and teammate Marilla Hockett both had three aces on the day. Samantha Holling had 21 assists and Brieyn Henley had 12 kills for the Nighthawks.

“We had a really good showing for our first match of the year,” Oakesdale coach McKinzie Turner said. “Obviously there are some things we need to work on.”

Colton begins season 1-1

The Colton Wildcats began their season with a road game Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Prescott High School. Colton won 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-12).

Sidni Whitcomb led the way for the Wildcats, having three aces and 10 assists. Grace Kuhle had three blocks, Holly Heistuman had five kills and Rachel Becker had 17 digs in the win.

On Monday, Sept. 12, Colton wasn’t able to get a win over the Asotin Panthers, losing 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-21).

Kaydee Heistuman had two blocks and three kills in the loss. Rachel Becker had four aces, Sidni Whitcomb had seven assists and Rachel Becker had 12 digs.

Games canceled

Last week’s scheduled game between Tekoa-Rosalia and Valley Christian was canceled.

Valley Christian “Couldn’t make the game work,” according to Tekoa-Rosalia coach Brian Reid. The match will be rescheduled for later this season.

Garfield-Palouse was scheduled to take on Reardan last week, but had to cancel due to water issues in the building. The game was rescheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Garfield-Palouse was also scheduled to face Logos of Moscow on Monday, Sept. 12, but that game was canceled due to Logos not able to get referees for the match.

St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse’s Tuesday, Sept. 13, game against Wilbur/Creston was canceled due to injuries and illness on Wilbur’s side. The Eagles will head to Yakima on Thursday, Sept. 15 for the Yakima Sun Dome Tournament.

CROSS COUNTRY

Runners from St. John compete at Valley Christian

St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse had two runners compete at Valley Christian. Rory Maloney finished 16th with a time of 13:23 in the two-mile race and Halle Berg finished with a time of 26:13 on the same course.

The Eagles weren’t able to have the full team compete due to not enough absences. Braiden Thomas, Madison Anderson and Sarah Quigley will be on the team for the Eagles in future events.

Seaport Invite results

Colfax and Garfield-Palouse competed at the Seaport Invite Saturday, Sept. 10 at Beachview Park in Clarkston. Colfax did not qualify for overall team scores in the 5,000 meter varsity, but the Vikings did, finishing fourth out of seven qualifying teams.

The two top-placing members of Gar-Pal were sophomores Brendan Snekvik and Kieran Snekvik, who finished sixth and seventh in the boy’s 5,000 meter run with times of 18:04.30 and 18:14.96, respectively.

Colfax did not have a runner compete in the boys’ 5,000m but did have one in the girls’, with sophomore Gabby Rabaiotti finishing 25th out of 40 runners with a time of 27:30.23. Garfield-Palouse senior Kennedy Cook finished fifth with a time of 23:02.36.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Chewelah 41, Colfax 28

The Bulldogs were unable to overcome a fast start by the Cougars on Friday. Chewelah got out to a 21-6 start in the first quarter, but Colfax (0-2, 0-2) was able to take the lead halfway through the third quarter, holding a narrow 28-27 lead. The Cougars took back the lead at the end of the third, but the Bulldogs were still within seven points, down 35-28 at the end of the third quarter.

Colfax wasn’t able to add more points on the board in the fourth while Chewelah (2-0, 2-0) put up six, resulting in the 13-point loss for the Bulldogs.

Colfax outgained Chewelah in the game by 61 yards, but had thre turnovers and a blocked punt. Mason Gilchrist had two of the four touchdowns for Colfax during the game.

Troy 66, Colton/Genesee 28

The Colton/Genesee Bulldogs dropped to 1-2 on the season in an Idaho Whitepine League matchup against the Troy Trojans on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs will head into next week with a bye and face the Prairie Pirates of Cottonwood at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.
