Colfax dusts off Reardan in district opener

Bulldogs remain undefeated as postseason begins

SPOKANE VALLEY-The Colfax girls basketball team has one goal in mind: hoisting the 2B state championship trophy to cap off an undefeated, title-winning season. The Bulldogs took their first playoff step toward that goal Monday, easily defeating the Reardan Screaming Eagles 60-24 in the District 7 2B quarterfinals.

After surrendering the first five points of the game, Colfax scored 11 straight and never gave up its lead.

"They have one goal in mind, and I don't have do a lot to convince them to prepare for it or get ready for it," Colfax head coach Jordan Holmes said. "This team has had a goal all year long, and sometimes they need reminders of why we're pushing in practice and those types of things, but they're focused and working as a unit."

The Bulldogs led 13-7 after a quarter, then went on a 22-7 run in the second period to take a 35-14 lead at the break that they extended to 50-19 after three quarters.

Sophomore Brynn McGaughy once again led Colfax in scoring with 26 points, while senior Jaisha Gibb knocked down four three-pointers and scored 14 points. Sophomore Brenna Gilchrist scored eight points and junior Paige Claassen had six points for the Bulldogs.

Eighth-grader Tenice Waters led Reardan with 11 points. Just four Screaming Eagles scored all game.

"Colfax just has so many pieces to a high-octane engine that can be missing a piston and still function at a very high rate," Reardan head coach Bob Swannack said. "They have a dominant post and multiple guards that understand their roles on the team, which is why they could potentially be a contender."

Colfax advanced to the District 7 2B semifinals and faced Upper Columbia Academy at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at West Valley High School. Reardan headed to a loser-out game against Northwest Christian at 3:30 p.m. at West Valley. Results were unavailable at press time.
