Nighthawks win nail-biter vs. T-Wolves

Oakesdale secures three-seed against Tekoa-Rosalia

OAKESDALE - The Tekoa-Rosalia and Oakesdale boys basketball teams faced each other in a competitive matchup on Jan. 13, a game that the Timberwolves won 63-57.

The Nighthawks got even with Tekoa-Rosalia on Feb. 3 with a 65-54 win, and secured the third Wheat Division seed in the upcoming District 9 tournament.

Oakesdale and Tekoa-Rosalia spent the first half of the opening quarter exchanging leads, with Nighthawks senior Alex McHargue giving his team a 7-5 lead with 6:00 left, before Isaac Bone responded with a fast-break dunk to give the Timberwolves the lead back, 8-7, with 4:04 left in the first.

Tekoa-Rosalia continued to build on its lead for the rest of the first quarter and held a 19-11 lead going into the second. Oakesdale spent most of the second quarter digging into the Timberwolves' lead until Will Lanius tied the game with 3:24 left in the first half. Ryker Reed followed his teammate's example and tied the game yet again with 2:27 left.

At the end of the first half, Tekoa-Rosalia held a 33-30 lead.

The two teams continued to keep pace with each other and the third quarter ended tied 47 apiece.

The Nighthawks took a 50-48 lead (their first lead since the opening quarter) since the opening quarter with 6:23 left in the game, and continued to build on it, going on a 15-6 run the rest of the quarter to walk out with the 11-point win.

"A lot of it boiled down to getting defensive rebounds," Oakesdale head coach Carl Crider said. "(Tekoa-Rosalia's) so big and physical that if you can't keep them off the board it just turns into too many possessions for them and, eventually, it comes back to bite you. In the second half when we were finally able to shore things up on the defensive boards, that allowed us to finally get the lead."

The loss to Oakesdale led to a tiebreaker situation between Tekoa-Rosalia and the Pomeroy Pirates, a tiebreaker that Pomeroy won, giving them the first seed of the Wheat Division of the 1B Southeast League.

"The one-seed was really important," Tekoa-Rosalia head coach Mike Bone said. "Just to have the two home games, to be able to get two home games against tough teams from the Grape Division, so it's definitely going to make it a lot more challenging trying to go down there and beat one of their teams."

Tekoa-Rosalia will face Yakama Nation Tribal at 6 p.m. on Feb. 9 in Rosalia. Oakesdale will face Sunnyside Christian at the same date and the same time in Sunnyside.

Morgun Martin led the Timberwolves with 22 total points, while Isaac Bone added 17. Jackson Perry led the Nighthawks with 26 points while Logan Brown added 11 and McHargue added 10.
