Colfax girls coast to district title

SPOKANE VALLEY - The first of what the Colfax girls hope are several nets cut down came without much contest in the District 7 2B Tournament last weekend. The Bulldogs blasted past Upper Columbia Academy and Liberty in the district semifinals and championship to secure a District title and advance to the District 6/7 Crossover next weekend.

Colfax defeated the Lions 61-25 and the Lancers 76-55.

"We've got a lot of room for improvement on the defensive end...but as a coach, the best feeling is that we're not peaking yet," Colfax head coach Jordan Holmes said. "We still have room to grow and improve, and these kids are so coachable."

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association's 2B Team of the Month for January came out firing behind the play of sophomore Brynn McGaughy, who notched eight first quarter points as Colfax built a 20-6 lead.

Liberty showed some fight on both ends in the second quarter, but still trailed 32-15 at halftime.

Colfax added to its lead in the third frame, leading 57-38 with eight minutes to play. The two teams played a nearly even fourth quarter with the game already in hand.

McGaughy, who was named the NE2B South Division Most Valuable Player, finished with 28 points and six rebounds. Hailey Demler had a huge game for the Bulldogs, notching 22 points.

Jaisha Gibb added 11 points for Colfax. Ellie Denny led Liberty with 15 points.

The wins improved Colfax to a perfect 23-0. The Bulldogs will play Liberty Bell, District 6's sixth-place finisher, in a winner-to-state, loser-out game back at West Valley High School at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18.

"At the end of the day, I tell my kids, 'at this point of the season, you just have to win,'" Holmes said. "However that happens, however ugly that may be, however that takes place you just have to find a way to win."

The Lancers will play fifth-place Bridgeport at West Valley at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in anothercrossover game.
