Pirates comeback against the Timberwolves

Tekoa-Rosalia falls to Pomeroy in back-and-forth game

DAYTON - After both teams led by double-digits, the Pomeroy boys came back to beat Tekoa-Rosalia 67-60 in a 1B District 9 consolation bracket game Feb. 15 in Dayton.

Pomeroy opened the game with a 10-0 advantage, leading by double-digits with 4:32 to go in the first quarter. Braxton French was able to get the Tekoa-Rosalia on the scoreboard after making one of two free throw attempts.

Isaac Bone joined his teammate and made a free throw attempt to convert and and-one play and cut the Pirates' lead down to 10-4 with 3:20 to go in the first quarter. The Timberwolves couldn't dig into the lead any further for the rest of the frame and Pomeroy had a 17-11 lead to start the second quarter.

Pomeroy found itself up by eight with 5:42 to go in the first half, then Tekoa-Rosalia went on a 14-9 run to cut the Pirates' lead to three, and the Timberwolves went into halftime trailing 32-29.

Coming out of the half, Tekoa-Rosalia's Jadin Campbell nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game and Braxton French would drive to the basket on the very next Timberwolves' possession to give his team a 34-32 lead with seven minutes to go in the third.

"They got off to a really good start," Tekoa-Rosalia head coach Mike Bone said. "I think once we got the first free throw to go in, finally make a basket, everybody was like 'Oh we can make one.' And so, we were able to pick it up. And we played really well to come back and take the lead."

Tekoa-Rosalia outscored Pomeroy 20-15 the rest of the quarter to go into the final quarter of regulation up by seven.

The Timberwolves would take their own double-digit lead to begin the fourth quarter, going up 58-47 with 7:01 left in the game.

Then, the Pirates would start to retake control of the game. Pomeroy went on a 13-3 run to take the lead off of a Trevin Kimble bucket with 2:15 to go in the game.

Tekoa-Rosalia failed to score another point for the remaining two minutes of regulation and Pomeroy walked out with the seven-point win to advance to the boys consolation bracket final.

"That's a really good basketball team, (Tekoa-Rosalia)," Pomeroy head coach Chris Wolf said. "And we knew they were going to make runs. The big thing was just to sustain and handle the runs and be willing to swing back on us. Another big thing for us was to make sure that, defensively, we got stops. And I think that's where the fourth quarter started for us, we got more stops. Third quarter they beat us up pretty good."

Pomeroy and Tekoa-Rosalia had split two matchups against each other earlier in the season, and a lot of that has to do with the fact the two teams are so comparable to one another.

"We thought we found something (against Pomeroy) last game we played," Bone said. "But they made a really good adjustment by putting Trevin down in the post. We felt like Morgun (Martin) was able to lock him up the last game, and so that was a really adjustment by them and it made us have to go back to putting Isaac on him. In turn, Isaac and Trevin were fouling each other a lot. It was the team that was able to play around that took care of this game."

Isaac Bone led the Timberwolves with 17 total points. Riley Gehring also added 15 for Tekoa-Rosalia in the loss.

Ollie Severs led Pomeroy with 25 points and Trevin Kimble had 22 in the win.
