SPOKANE-The Brynn McGaughy Show came to the Spokane Arena Thursday, March 2, and what a show it was. Behind her dominant effort, No. 1 Colfax defeated No. 7 Rainier 67-29 in the 2B Girls State Basketball Tournament quarterfinals at the Arena.
Early in the game, Hailey Demler took control of the Bulldogs' offense. She out-hustled the Mountaineers and scored seven of her team's first nine points.
In the latter part of the first quarter, McGaughy sizzled by scoring seven points. Between their combined 16 points, Colfax jumped to a 21-10 lead after one quarter.
From then on, it was all McGaughy. She exploded for a game-high 34 points on a perfect shooting night.
She made 13 two-point baskets, one 3-point basket and five free throws, all without a miss. Three times she grabbed a rebound at the defensive end of the court and sliced through the entire Rainier team, taking the ball coast-to-coast for scores.
Colfax led 39-16 at halftime and cruised through the second half for the 67-29 win.
Besides her 34 points, McGaughy pulled down 12 rebounds. Demler ended the game with 14 points.
Lauryn York scored seven points and Ava Swan and Jaisha Gibb each scored five.
"In the locker room we were so hyped for this game," McGaughy said. "I was really prepared because I've been waiting for this game forever."
McGaughy said the best part of her game was "grabbing the rebound and just running to the other end of the court."
Looking ahead to their game with Warden, McGaughy said, "We are ready for their press. We are fierce and are so ready."
Though McGaughy and Demler scored the bulk of the Bulldogs' points, Colfax head coach Jordan Holmes was pleased with her whole team's effort.
"I thought our kids played really hard," Holmes said. "Our girls got the jitters out and played fearless. Brynn played an incredible game. To not miss from the floor is insane."
With the win, Colfax plays Warden in a semifinal game at 7:15 p.m. Friday, March 3.
