Serving Whitman County since 1877

Norma D. Thompson

Norma D. Thompson, longtime Whitman County resident, passed away April 1, 2023, at the Spokane Hospice House. She was 84. No formal services are planned at this time.

Norma was born February 19, 1939, in Yuba City, California, to William and Mary Widener Baggett. She grew up in Northern California and as a young lady worked as a waitress in that area. Norma married Charles Hutcherson in 1960 and they made their home in Oakland, California.

They started a family there with the births of a son and a daughter and Norma kept busy as a homemaker and mother. Following a divorce from Charles, Norma went back to waitressing when she could.

She married Gerald Thompson in 1970 in Reno, Nevada and the family moved to Gridley, California where he worked as a tile setter. They moved to Spokane in 1971 and five years later to Tekoa where Norma worked at the Tekoa Care Center. Gerald died in 2001 and Norma moved to Colfax.

She loved to read and she enjoyed growing flowers and raising vegetables. She also enjoyed watching the deer on the hillside across from her apartment.

She is survived by four children; Thomas Hutcherson, Colfax, Karen (Milton) Groom, Colfax, Jerry Wayne Thompson, Kansas, and James S. Thompson, Moscow, Idaho; by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren as well as two nieces. In addition to her husband Gerald; Norma was preceded in death by brothers Armond and David Baggett, by a nephew Michael, and by her parents.

The family suggests memorial gifts in her memory be made to the Colfax Volunteer Fire Department or the Spokane Hospice House. On-line guest book is at http://www.corbeillfuneralhomes.com.
