Commissioners discuss SB 5770

Commissioners Speak on Property Tax Increase

COLFAX –– Whitman County Commissioners met on Monday, April 17, to discuss the new Senate bill (SB) 5770.

SB 5770 has 20 senate sponsors and would change the previous voter-approved property tax factor for the state and local governments. This change would increase state property taxes from 1% to 3% while changing the definition of inflation.

The bill falls under the title of “Providing state and local property tax reform.”

SB 5570 was introduced just days before the 10-day window, under the constitution, that would have required a 2/3 vote to advance the bill.

“This is the first time they have had a property tax bill,” said Whitman County Commissioner Art Swannack. “BlueSky would increase the state property tax up to 3%, and the county and city property tax could go up to a 3% increase. So I don’t know what’s going to happen with it.”

The session is scheduled to end Wednesday, April 26.
