Colton baseball six-game winning streak ends

Sunnyside Christian moves to third in conference

COLTON — Colton baseball saw their longest winning streak since the 2015-2016 season snapped as they were defeated in Sunnyside, Washington to Sunnyside Christian 8-4 in their first game.

The Wildcats dropped to 8-10-1 on the year following the match up with the Knights, placing them sixth in the 1B Southeast Baseball conference.

The Wildcats starting pitcher was Grant Wolf. He pitched just over five innings and allowed five hits for eight runs, six of which were earned. He also struck out six batters, but walked three in his outing.

For the Knights, their starting pitcher went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, but just one of the runs was earned. The Knights also struck out 11 batters in the game.

The Knights jumped out to the early 2-0 lead after two innings, then doubled their lead after three to lead 4-0.

Sunnyside Christian only had five hits in the game compared to seven from Colton, but the Knights took advantage of the four errors Colton had in the game to take the victory. Of the eight runs scored, only six were earned from the Knights, and only three of them were RBIs.

The Wildcats did not score until the top of the fifth inning when they tied the game after scoring all four of their runs. Wolf led the team with two RBIs, but Angus Jordan was the offensive threat for the Wildcats, going 3-4 with an RBI. Both Jordan and Wolf stole three bases each.

After Colton tied the game in the top of the fifth, the bottom half of the inning saw the Knights reclaim their lead, scoring three runs to take the 7-4 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth the Knights added an insurance run to their score, making the final score 8-4.

With Colton having their record sit at 5-9 in conference play, it is unlikely we will see them in any postseason tournament and their season will end with an overall record of 8-10-1. Last season the Wildcats went 8-8, the same amount of wins as this season.
