Garfield May Day keeps tradition alive

May Day sees live music, parades and more festivities

GARFIELD - After three months of planning, the community of Garfield commemorated its annual May Day Celebration this past weekend with music, lively parading down Main, and candy by the handful.

"It was absolutely a success," said Garfield Shon Clark, who heads the Community of Garfield Association, the organization behind planning the celebration.

"When I first started we maybe had three vendors," said Clark, "this time we probably had thirty."

The weekend's festivities kicked off with an evening of live music and dancing on Friday the 19th, accompanied by food vendors and a beer garden.

The following morning, a community members young and old gathered for breakfast, followed by a kiddie parade featuring pets, excited youngsters, and excited youngsters face-painted as pets.

As the temperatures rose, community members gathered along the shaded sidewalks of Main Street to see the main parade event.

As the parade began its procession through town, a water balloon fight broke out on the intersection between 4th Street and West Main, with many bystanders falling prey to stray water balloons thrown by event volunteers and children alike.

Those watching the parade were treated to performances from daredevil bikers, police cars with blazing sirens, vintage hot rods, and a constant deluge of candy.

For those that missed this past weekend's festivities, Clark assures that the community of Garfield has many events in store for the remained of the year, including a fishing derby and a harvest fest come October.
