Serving Whitman County since 1877
COLFAX — Friends of the Whitman County Library hosted their newly founded annual Tea Party last month and are ready to raise their cups and cheers to the announcement of next year’s celebration, which will be held on May 11, 2024.
“Our first event was a success,” said Friends of the Whitman County Library Event Organizer Nanette Nebe. “It was very delightful. We had people of all ages there to share a catered lunch with tea. We had sandwiches, scones, tartlets, and delicious tea for all ages. “
The event offered a variety of kid-friendly sweets and treats while offering a more sophisticated selection for the older attendees.
The eloquent and fine tea party welcomed locals dawning their 20th-century clothes and hats while carrying their fine china dishes to show off.
“My favorite part of the event was seeing attendees bring in their own china and dishes from home. They were able to share and show their used ‘dust-em-off’ china,” noted Nebe.
Nearly fifty local vendors and businesses donated to the tea party and silent auction.
Friends of the Whitman County Library hosted this as their annual fundraiser. As a fundraiser, the organization welcomed donations from across the county for the silent auction, leading to popular and competitive baskets such as the “Eat Across Whitman County Basket,” including several gift certificates allowing the winner to dine in and try food from the county.
The tea party took place at the Whitman County Library’s Center.
The Center is named after local Bettie Steiger, who traveled to attend high tea parties across Whitman County decades ago.
“I wanted to bring back the tradition she enjoyed with friends and family and bring that back for Whitman County to honor her,” Nebe said.
Steiger passed away in 2008 at 74 years old. She is buried at the Colfax Cemetary next to her late husband, Donald Steiger.
Nebe added, “I just wanted to thank everyone who came and show how we are honoring Betty Steiger and her family for the donations. This is our way of saying thank you. Bettie was an author; she wrote a book of poems, and her involvement was huge in this community.”
